A number of things may ease this natural anxiety.
First, remember that your exchange partner is letting you stay in his or her home, and probably has some of the same concerns. Our experience has been that most members go out of their way to take special care of their exchange home.
Credit card payments provide us with information about you and all members. By paying for your listing, as opposed to listing a home on a free site, the company that processes our credit card payments provides us with the names on credit cards, home, email, and IP (which gives us the country from where person registered) addresses. We use this information and compare it with the member's application. This is a safeguard, not a guarantee.
You will probably have had enough correspondence (usually 5+ letters and a few phone calls) while arranging details of the exchange to feel comfortable with your exchange partner. It is common practice to ask for and provide references, especially from prior exchanges. You need to make sure you feel absolutely comfortable with your exchange partner before the exchange.
If you don't feel comfortable for any reason, there are lots of other members to choose from. Green Theme International follows up on exchanges, and on request, will provide reports of comments or problems.
Some other common precautions:
Remove things of particular value, or your "special" things. Chances are your trading partner will also prefer that fragile or valuable articles are out of the way.
Ask a neighbour to call in. This not only allows a trusted neighbour to make sure everything is alright, but also provides your guests with a welcome local contact.
An exchange agreement can help establish responsibilities for any problems, such as who pays for utilities, breakage, plumbing problems, and other unexpected occurrences.
Your insurance policy may cover some situations, but be sure to check with your agent about your particular coverage.
Most exchangers take excellent care of their exchange home, but please remember that some wear and tear occurs even while you occupy your home. If the idea of having someone stay in your home while you are away makes you uncomfortable, Green Theme International may not be for you.
