Saint Claude, nestled in the Jura mountains.
Our home is located in the historic center of Saint Claude, in the mountains of Jura.
We love living in the heart of the town, with the market, shops, library, cinema and museums at our doorstep. Our street is one of the oldest in the town, originally the market street, and the house itself is over 200 years old. Some original features remain inside like the ceiling beams in the living room.
Our living area was recently renovated, and we in the top two floors of our townhouse. First floor includes kitchen, laundry room, living room, office and art studio, and upstairs are the 4 four bedrooms and mezzanine/office. Lots of toys for all ages (baby to teenagers) , books, and several computers you can use. We hope you`ll feel welcome here!
We currently do not have outdoor space of our own, but there are outdoor cafes right next door, as well as a playground for kids across the street, in front of the cathedral. In the summer there are also water fountains children can play in in the museum courtyard near our house, and there is a wonderful outdoor swimming pool a 15 minute walk away, with great views of the mountains. We like to think of the Jura landscape as our backyard, and Saint Claude is a great base for discovering all it has to offer.
About the location
The area is fabulous for nature lovers, and beautiful in all seasons: hiking or swimming in the lakes in the summer, and cross country skiing or sledding in the winter. We are close to "Les Rousses" station, and several lakes and waterfalls are just a short drive away (cascades du Herisson, lac de Lamoura, lac de l`Abbaye, lac de Vouglans... ) There are many trails to explore! Our mountains aren`t as steep as the Alps, which makes our paths very family friendly. It is also quieter, a peaceful region away from the crowds of tourists!
Saint Claude is the capital of pipe making; a quirky little museum explains that history and several artisans still make pipes. Wooden toys are another specialty; a wonderful toy museum in the nearby town of Moirans makes a fun day out with kids on a rainy day. The cathedral is another landmark; the Abbaye museum explains the rich archeological history of the city and showcases modern art and exhibits. More recent history of the town includes its dynamic worker`s union coop, founded in the early 20th century and now a cultural center and cafe with concerts and events.
We are also close to the swiss border, and you can have day trips to Geneva, Lausanne, or other swiss cities. Lyon and Besançon are less than 2h away by car.
