28 South Street.
24-28 South Street is a Grade 2 Listed Terrace built around 1785, and still held on a 999 year lease at a rent of 6p from the Lowther Estate dated June 1763. Probably the oldest houses in the street which in the time of Wordsworth who was born in 1750 in the next street was known as Back Lane, and faced out to open country. The house was modernised in 2008 and now has a dowstairs loo and an adjacent large kitchen/diner with a tiled floor (underfloor heating). The house has full central heating and a woodfire stove in the living room entered directly off the street. In front of the house there is a communal cobbled yard, and at the rear a small garden with fruit trees, patio, law, planta and a bower. Visitor parking (if space can be found) outside the house. Sainsbury supermarket is 5 minutes walk , there is a delicatessen/restaurant opposite, and the main street is also 7 minutes walk, with bus connections to Penrith and Whitehaven. The Loweswater fells are 7 miles South, the lakes of Loweswater/Buttermere/Crummock, thus all within easy distance by bike or car or summer bus. The river Derwent is about 10 minutes walk across Main Street. Cockermouth is a delightful small market town with plenty of good shops and a great bookshop; etc. And a small swimming pool. And for the romantic a Norman castle and an occasionally resident chatelaine who traces her ancestry (via marriage) back to the de Lucy's of the 12th/13th century.
About the location
Cockermouth is on the fringe of the North Western Lake District. Within 15 minutes drive is the National Park and the fells.. the peaks of Melbreak, Great Gable, Grasmoor, Dalehead,Red Pike,High Stile, being reachable from Buttermere. Scawfell Pike takes longer being best accessible from Wasdale Head which is at least an hours drive. Without any doubt the Lake Disttrict is one of the most beautiful in England, and although some peaks will be relatively , crowded in the summer months,it is not at all difficult to be alone ! The visitor needs a good map and copies of various of Wainwright's guides to the Fells to identify the fell tops and the variety of routes from different starting points
