You could visit Haig Colliery Mining Museum which stands on the site of the former Haig Pit, Cumbria's last deep coal mine, which closed in 1986.
Investigate further with a visit to The Beacon. With a special weather centre on the top floor, and heaps of information on the harbour and its surrounds, visitors can use the powerful telescopes to take in the amazing views. The Beacon has galleries displaying temporary exhibitions, and also their own museum collection of paintings, prints and photographs. Learn more about the local history of this Georgian town - a fascinating experience for all ages. The Beacon also incorporates a shop where you can find gifts of Cumbrian origin.
You can explore the Western Lake District's peaceful Ennerdale valley, or drive down the coast to Eskdale and Wasdale and visit Muncaster Castle, nr Ravenglass. From Ravenglass, you'll be able to board the La'al Ratty, the Ravenglass and Eskdale miniature steam railway.
Alternatively, since the railway station is only a five minute walk away, you could choose to leave the car behind altogether, and take a rail trip up the beautiful Cumbrian coast.
