Stakesby Vale Whitby is a cosy and comfortable house tucked away in a quiet backwater - Whitby
Whitby town centre is a 5 minute walk away. Pannet Park which houses a museum and gallery, and a big children’s playground, is just across the road. Nearby is the town swimming pool and leisure centre. The sea and the long sandy beach is 10 minutes walk away.
Downstairs there is a hallway, small cloakroom, kitchen, dinning room, sitting room . This area can be used as either open plan or divided with doors (good for cosy evenings in). The kitchen has a cooker, washing machine, fridge freezer and microwave. Upstairs there are two double bed rooms (one king sized) a single room and a newly installed bathroom with shower over the bath. An exciting attic is reached by very steep stairs. It has proved attractive to visiting children who like to “camp” up there. There is a bed and a futon in the attic. The house is cosy with central heating as well as a gas fire. We have wifi.
Outside there is a big back yard and a long steep garden at the front with a number of steps down to the road. There is a small lawn. A sunny veranda overlooks the garden which is surprisingly warm and sheltered being on the south side. Patio furniture is provided. On warm days it is pleasant to sit out and watch the large number of birds, including bats and owls, and also butterflies in the summer. Level access to the house is obtained via the allotment gate at the back. Our neighbours are friendly so be prepared for a good chat!
There is on-street parking at the back or in front of our garage on the south side which is linked to the house via a number of steps. Note the bottom road is unmade and can be a little rough and dusty.
About the location
Whitby is a pretty and unspoiled harbour town surrounded by The North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Fish is still regularly landed. Its most famous mariner was Captain Cook who, having been apprenticed here, set out to ultimately “discover” Australia in a Whitby built collier. There is a full sized replica of The Endeavour in the harbour. There is also The Captain Cook Museum. Whitby is world famous as it is where Dracula arrived in Bram Stokers book. The town hosts many festivals, firework displays, and events over the year.
Whitby has excellent transport links with regular buses along the coast as well as a local train service, linking to mainline services in Middlesborough and Newcastle, and regular steam trains (in season) on the NYMR to Pickering. There are regular buses from Scarborough and Middlesborough stopping 100 yards from our gate.
For cyclists the "cinder track" N1 cycleway starts 30 yards from our gate. You can cycle 23 miles to Scarborough along the old railway line. You can store your bikes in our garage.
We often do not use our car at all when staying, preferring the excellent public transport and walking.
There are many pubs and restaurants in the town as well as many little shops, butchers, bakeries, fish shops and also a well stocked supermarket. On The Eastside there are shops selling clothes gifts, books and jewellery made from local Whitby jet. There is a jet museum.
The church and Abbey (English Heritage) which dominates the town are reached via the “199 steps”. As well as fishing from the pier it is possible to go sea fishing and whale watching in season. There are a number of pleasure boats.
Whitby is a good centre for walking The Cleveland Way passes through the town. Robin Hoods Bay, Staithes, and Runswick Bay are all pretty coastal communities within easy reach. We leave out maps and walking information for our visitors. St Hildas Way (40 miles) is easily accessible by public transport and finishes at The Abbey.
Bempton Cliffs (40 miles) bird reserve is a spectacular day out at the right time of year.
Inland there are many pretty villages and hamlets and spectacular moor land scenery. Goathland is famous both for the TV series “Heartbeat” and also as the station for Hogworts in Harry Potter. There are many walks across The Moors and in the Esk Valley.
Visitors Abi(5) and Evan(7) say, “Whitby is better than Disney Land.” They should know because they have been to both!
