Snowdrop Cottage

Snowdrop Cottage is a delightful detached 18th century, brick and flint former farm cottage, situated 1 mile from the town of Lewes, in semi-rural surroundings with countryside views. We completely renovated and refurbished the cottage in 2009 to an extremely high standard, with strong environmental credentials throughout. Internally it has mainly underfloor heating, powered by an air sourced heat pump, with a Plug-in Electric Car Charger on the driveway, with private secure parking for up to 2 cars. However it is not necessary to have a car, as Lewes train station/taxis are 1 mile away, and there is a proper footpath from the cottage into central Lewes, which takes about 20 mins at a medium pace. Also bus stops are close to the Cottage, taking you in one direction in to Lewes and on to Brighton, and in the other direction to Tunbridge Wells.

There is a lovely spacious, enclosed garden to the front and rear, perfect for most pooches, however we do have a pond, so please bear this in mind if you are planning on bringing your dog, and for this reason our property is not suitable for children. We have 2 well behaved dogs, who do not shed hair and sleep downstairs. Your dog would be very welcome as long as they don’t venture upstairs or sleep on the beds.

Inside the Cottage, downstairs there is double aspect sitting room, with large sofa, TV and Piano. There is a large modern kitchen/diner, with wood fired/electric ESSE cooking range, and bifold doors leading to a garden patio. Upstairs there are 2 characterful double bedrooms, one with king size bed and a roll-top bath, and a separate bathroom with a large rainfall shower.

Accessed from the kitchen patio, there is a utility room with washer & dryer, and w.c.

About the location

Lewes is a historic medieval town, bursting with history and charm. It has a wonderful Castle and Anne of Cleves House is situated here. It is on the edge of the South Downs National Park, perfect for walkers (we like to head out over the hills to a country pub) and other outdoor activities such as cycling, paragliding and paddle-boarding too. It has a train station, with trains to/from Gatwick Airport, and London Victoria is an hour away.

The town itself has lots of independent shops and a wealth of antique shops to explore, plus great coffee shops (check out particularly Trading Post, Ground (dog friendly) & Flint Owl Bakery (dog friendly). There are numerous great pubs and restaurants (Erawan for the best Thai food EVER, Rustico for fabulous Pizza (dog friendly) and the quirky, welcoming Fuego Lounge (dog friendly) are our favourites). There is a wonderful completely Vegan Cafe, Cafe Vegu, with great coffee, cakes and savouries, & is also dog friendly :-)

Lewes is a very cultural town and hosts many artists, writers, and musicians, so there are plenty of events happening all year round. It has a beautiful independent Cinema, with always a great selection of mainstream & arthouse films on throughout the year, and often live jazz on Sunday mornings, when you can enjoy a lovely brunch, followed by maybe an afternoon matinee!

10 minutes drive away is Charleston House and Firle Church, both places famous for their Bloomsbury Group history, and also the village of Rodmell, where Virginia Woolf lived in Monk’s House, which is open to the public through the National Trust. Alfriston Clergy House, Sheffield Park Garden, Nymans, Bateman’s (Rudyard Kipling’s former home), Bodiam Castle and Standen (Arts & Crafts house) are just some of the many National Trust properties nearby, which is particularly great for those with a NT membership already.

5 mins drive away is World Class Glyndebourne Opera House, where you can picnic in the wonderful gardens there, and enjoy an amazing operatic experience, during their renowned Summer and Autumn Festival of Opera every year.
At the beginning of November, the hugely famous Lewes Bonfire Night, is a unique, incredible sight.

East Sussex is a burgeoning wine region, specializing in English sparking wine. There are plenty of stunning wineries to visit in the local area - the patio at Ridgeview Vineyard, Ditchling, is a picture-perfect setting. Lewes itself is home to the historic Harvey`s Brewery which you can visit, it also supplies beers to many local pubs, delivered by traditional horse and cart around the town, which is quite an wonderful sight to see.

For Day trips, Brighton & Hove, Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells are all 30 mins drive away, and can be reached by bus or train from Lewes.
